On Tax Day

I wrote the following in response to this and this. Nothing new, but I thought I would share.

The purpose of government is to preserve the individual rights of its citizens. They are empowered already through freedom. Wealth is generated when people are free to choose what to do with their own property. Taxes are the confiscation of that property which denies that freedom to choose and thereby destroys the ability to create more wealth.

What are the wealthy going to do with their money? Hide it in mattresses? No, they will either spend it or invest it. Either way more wealth is created. When government takes it and gives it to someone else, all it does is move the same wealth around. It does not create anything new.

Most people can be contributing members of society, but they must first ask themselves this question, "What do I have to offer to others?" not "What can other do for me?"

The small percentage that cannot do for themselves would be better served by private charities than government programs.
