A Libertarian Assessment of Scott Brown’s Win
The results are in and Scott Brown is about to declare victory. Pundits on both sides of the aisle will now start the spin. Republicans will say that this clearly repudiates President Barack Obama’s agenda on health care, while the Democrats will say that is continued anger at the status quo in Washington.
In my opinion they are both right, but for the wrong reasons. While Brown’s victory is impressive, it is not the “biggest thing that has happened since the Stock Market Crash of 1929,” as one right leaning talking head put it. This is anger and backlash a big government that continues to grown bigger regardless of the party in charge.
Yes, America wants change, but not just a return to the failed policies of the two major political parties. Brown’s election, I hope, is a new first shot heard ‘round the world at Lexington and Concord. What we all want is a government that protects our fundamental rights of life, liberty and property. In short, one that preserves of freedom rather than restricts it.
